Ladder's locked..

But I can still practice with the new units.

Before the Replay:

Booya!  I've modified my TvT opening to be Barracks, Factory, then more Barracks into early pressure and a second expand.

It worked fantastically.  That free siege mode is all the justification I need to go early tanks.  He had a widow mine that did some good damage and ultimately defended against my first push, but it more than paid for itself in his units lost compared to mine and it let me get my second up super safe.

I got more macro going, started a third, threw down some structures for upgrades and pushed with basically the same comp and ended the game.

After the Replay:

I moved out at the 7:15 mark with 50 supply compared to his 28 supply.  6 of that lead was in workers. That makes me feel good.

Watching the replay I was just getting everything a little faster than him.  When he finally finished defending the push at 11 minutes I had 67 supply to his 25.

First non Placement Match in HotS...

And he was quite polite!  Hooray for the Bronze League.

Before the Replay:

So I decided I wanted to go Mech because hey, free Siege Mode right?  Plus, Firebats.  Or whatever they're called...Hellbats?

So I wasn't very agressive, I pushed once but he'd already gotten a good Roach army up.  I pulled back and expanded and saved my units.  I did a decent job of spending my money, but the build could have certainly been smoother.  Still, a win's a win.  My Tanks crushed his Roaches and my Vikings roamed the map picking off his Overlords.  He build Hydras for Defense and a huge Muta army, but I built a lot of Marines (so much fore mech) and slaughtered them.

Finally I pushed and he GG'd out with a "wp".  He was Platinum.

After the Replay:

I'm not totally sure what all he was doing.  He did a double extractor trick, but didn't pop them until after he had an Overlord up....

He triple expanded right off the bat.  I'll have to watch for that in the future, scout it out.

I did supply block him a lot.  That feels good =)

Until he built 12 Overlords at once.  Wow.  At least that gave me time to expand without any pressure on me.

I destroyed all of those and then some giving me a chance to expand to my third after he attacked with and lost all his Roaches.

So yeah, mostly the replay feels the same as the game felt before.  Interestingly when I got my 3rd up at 18 minutes it felt really slow, but he was still at his original 3 bases because he was constantly trying to defend and rebuild his Overlords.

Edit: Looks like the ladder locks tomorrow so I'll be staying Bronze for this season.  Perhaps I can get back to Silver next season.

Last Placement Match!

I've gotten my ass kicked in 3 of 4 games so far.  Let's see what the last one has in store...

And I got my ass kicked.

Before the Replay:

Protoss just went full out air agression.  I could do NOTHING to deal with it.  And I totally fucked myself with my opening because I tried a different build so worried about getting early 4-gated.

So, GG.  Bronze placed.  I guess more agressive scouting will be required of me in HotS.  And better builds.  I never had any cash in this game, my build sucked.  If I'd had more cash I probably could have won.

After the Replay:

Same as before the replay.  My build sucked, I wasn't getting any income and I just couldn't keep up with his production.

Placed!, Bronze League Division Rank 100, Remaining Bonus Pool 654

I'm terrible at HotS!

PvZ, we both went random.  He beat me in under 5 minutes.  No wait, under 9 minutes.  Just felt like 5.

Before the Replay:

I went for my typical 15 hatch, pool opening.  He scouted me and did a 4 gate.  I saw it coming and threw down a lot of Lings, had my Speed up and 4 Queens.  Still couldn't hold it.

He was Platinum.

After the Replay:

Yep, nothing I missed.  4 gate into win.

Another Horrific Loss

ZvZ this time.  I see a bad pattern forming here.

Before the Replay:

I went 15 hatch, pool.  I was expecting an early rush of Zerglings.  I didn't get it.  So I killed an Overlord with my Queens and rushed with some slow Lings.

They got over agressive and went in for his Queens at his second where they were instantly surrounded by his Speedlings and crushed.  He then countered, went Baneling and beat me.

If I hadn't committed my Slowlings, had just scouted and pulled back, I wouldn't have been instantly crushed and my Roaches might have had a chance when his Speedlings + Banelings rolled my base.

He was Diamond.

After the Replay:

He also did a 15 hatch into pool.  Mine was actually faster, as was my APM.  He just managed his upgrades better, had Banelings and my pre Replay analysis was right on about my mistake.  If I'd kept my 'lings and been able to get my Roaches up, I think I could have won.

1 Placement match Won, 2 Placement matches Lost, 2 Remaining

Blown Away

Not even close TvT.  He was bronze league.

Before the Replay:

I tried to do a quick but macro oriented marine build but he got more marines and a tank out faster than me.

That's all there is too it.  He hit me hard at the same time I was pushing out, but did it with more.  I defended but he immediately returned with more and smoked me.  GG.

After the Replay:

He macro'd better.  The only difference was he threw down a factory early and macro'd better.  Just better mechanics.

Also his APM was crazy high.  He macro'd pretty good, had a better build and had high APM, am I in serious trouble on the new post HotS ladder?  Maybe so.

1 Placement match Won, 1 Placement match Lost, 3 to go

Heart of the Swarm!

First ranked game of Heart of the Swarm.  Played a little in the beta, played the campaign and I've played vs the computer for a while.  Finally time to try vs real people.  Let's see how it goes, first Ranked match.

And I win!

Before the Replay:

I didn't play very aggressively   I pushed once sorta early with 3 Zealots at the front and my Mothership Core at the back.  I think I got a few SCVs and did some damage to his front Supply Depots, but that was it.

Otherwise I sat back, micro'd, tech'd and just tried to keep vision on the map.  He pushed and I stopped it.  He pushed again and I stopped it again.  As I was moving out to take my 3rd, he left the game.  No GL HF at the beginning or GG at the end.  Looking at his profile, I think he was also playing his placement matches.

After the Replay:

I probably could have kept hitting him hard.  When I moved out with my Mothership Core and 3 Zealots from 1 Gateway he'd only managed to produce 2 Marines from 2 Barracks.  I suppose scouting would have helped me identify that sooner.

He never checked the watchtowers  I held them without contest all game and his income was terrible, never built an Orbital or even Muled.  Not really much of a contest I guess.

1 Win, 4 Placement Matches to go

Edit: Actually he did eventually make an Orbital.  But he really didn't Mule and he didn't expand.  He also stopped building SCVs around 23.  He did do a better job of keeping his money low than I did, though.
